  • I was just going in for a regular checkup,” explained Venuti. “I felt great, and I never expected a diagnosis like this.” Venuti’s primary care physician, NSMC’s Elysia Griswold,M.D., noticed that Venuti’s glands were swollen and red. After a dose of antibiotics didn’t clear things up, Dr. Griswold referred her to Charles Leidner,M.D., an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist at NSMC. NSMC provides a variety of professionally led peer support groups to help patients learn more about their diseases and treatments, and promote both physical and emotional healing. She joined the NSMC Cancer Center’s Head and Neck Cancer Support Group. Cancer free for nearly three years now, Venuti has participated in the NSMC CancerWALK, and even takes her story on the road.

  • An ambulance would have gotten him into an emergency room faster, and the driver would have known to take Kelly to a designated Stroke Center like NSMC Salem Hospital or NSMC Union Hospital in Lynn. Instead, Kelly sat in the waiting room, wasting valuable treatment time. The sooner we can assess patients with stroke symptoms the better,” explained Sanford Levy, M.D., the medical director of NSMC’s stroke program. “There are now medications that can be given to certain stroke patients to break up any blood clots in the brain and mitigate the effects of the stroke. Finally, more than six hours after his initial stroke, Kelly was taken by ambulance to NSMC Union Hospital and quickly admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Kelly received speech therapy at NSMC Salem Hospital and has had a full recovery. In 2003, he wrote a series of articles about his experience at the NSMC Cancer Center for the Salem News. “Going through cancer—and now this stroke—has taught me that I’m not immortal.

  • Nitrous Oxide Helps Salem Mom through Delivery at NSMC Birthplace When Megan DiMambro walked into the Birthplace at North Shore Medical Center NSMC this past June, her birthing plan was the same as it had been with her first child: “Take things one step at a time and, if possible, give birth naturally.” While an epidural had been necessary with her first delivery, this time she was armed with knowledge about a new pain management option being offered ... Every woman experiences labor differently, which is why it is important that we have various coping options to meet their needs,” said NSMC midwife, Mary Collari, C.N.M. “By offering nitrous oxide at the Birthplace not only are we improving the labor experience, but we also give patients the choice of having a medicine that has limited effects on them and their baby, allowing them to bond... Often times, women start labor unsure about whether they want an epidural,” said Nikolai Gonzales, M.D., NSMC Chief of Obstetrics Anesthesia. “Fortunately, the NSMC Birthplace offers many pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic pain management options in addition to epidurals and nitrous oxide, including a supportive birth environment, touch and massage, maternal positioning, relaxation and br...

  • In February of 2015, a friend underwent weight loss surgery at NSMC and encouraged Shannon to look into the program, but, as Shannon put it, “I wasn’t ready.” The following month, when Shannon turned 35, she realized she needed to do something about the excess weight she was carrying around, especially because her primary care doctor had indicated she was borderline diabetic. NSMC’s support of its weight loss patients extends far beyond surgery. In fact, post-surgery, patients are required to follow up with NSMC’s Health and Wellness staff once a month for a year, and then every other month for the second year. Shannon credits this high level of support from NSMC, along with additional support from friends and family, as keys to her success. NSMC’s Surgical Weight Loss Program is now offering free information sessions at NSMC Salem Hospital and the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers.

  • While the 59-year-old wasn’t initially keen on the idea, she agreed to explore the lung cancer screening program at NSMC. “I didn’t want to face the fact that my decision to smoke for so long could be affecting my health now,” Willard says. The lung cancer screening program at NSMC is designed to evaluate patients who have a history of smoking. Willard’s lung cancer screening, performed in August of 2015 at NSMC Salem Hospital, revealed a nodule on her lung. NSMC interventional radiologist Miriam Neuman, M.D., performed a needle biopsy that confirmed that the nodule was cancerous. Willard spent a week at NSMC Salem Hospital so her lung function could be monitored, and returned to normal activity within a couple of months.

  • Once a pulse was restored, they put him on monitors, inserted intravenous lines and gave him medications to stabilize his heart for the short ride to NSMC Salem Hospital. Three days later, NSMC and Massachusetts General Hospital cardiac surgeon Ann Toran, M.D., performed a quadruple bypass to restore proper blood flow in his heart. After his release from the hospital, Fitzgerald enrolled in NSMC’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, where he fine-tuned his diet, built up his strength and endurance through supervised walking and weight training, and learned better ways to deal with stress. We were so lucky that John saw Dave and started CPR so quickly,” said Tracie Fitzgerald, Dave’s wife. “And on top of that, we were fortunate to be so close to NSMC Salem Hospital, where they could perform the angioplasty and cardiac surgery right there. He started jogging again in June, is eating better and has used some stress management techniques. “I’m so thankful to John, the paramedics, and everyone in the NSMC Heart Center.

Colarusso’s wife, Betty, attended diet and exercise classes at NSMC alongside her husband, a choice Colarusso says has been extremely beneficial. “She does all of our food shopping and cooking, so it helped for her to hear first hand the nutritional changes I needed to make,” said Colarusso. “Surprisingly, those changes didn’t have as much to do with what I was eating, but rather ho... • With the encouragement of a friend who had recently had gastric band surgery at NSMC, she met with NSMC bariatric surgeon Bernard Benedetto,MD, and decided to have minimally invasive surgery to insert a gastric band also known as a lap band around her stomach. “I liked the band better than gastric bypass because it’s adjustable, could change with me and be removed if necessary,” said ... The post-operative program is what sets NSMC apart from other hospitals,” said James. “A friend had a gastric bypass at another hospital and because she had no follow-up support, her lifestyle and habits didn’t change and she gained back much of her weight after her initial weight loss. NSMC’s team has helped me solve real life issues, like the temptation of birthday cake and the changing attitudes of some friends.

Once in good condition at NSMC, she had a number of cardiac tests to determine what caused her heart to stop. It was not until Stablewski mentioned that she had been feeling a little run down the week prior to her heart stopping that NSMC physicians solved the mystery of her attack. In addition to slowly getting back to walking and kayaking, she plans to join NSMC’s ICD support group. “I’m looking forward to sharing my story and hearing what others are doing to get back to a normal life,” said Stablewski. “Life has given me a second chance. I am so grateful to the heroes who came to my aid and my NSMC team.
